KBĢ930 NE Killingsworth (Dame) and 5425 NE 30th (Lil’ Dame) On Friday and Saturday mornings, playful pop-ups Bialy Bird and Matcha Freak commandeer the space. Meanwhile, Lil' Dame has an exciting new resident: Matta, from food cart stars Richard and Sophia Le, taking their next big step, indoors. Currently, it’s the rollicking, modern-rustic Mexican hot spot Clandestino and veteran Patrick McKee’s seasonal cooking. Check the Dame website to determine who’s in the house at any moment. The only constant is good fun and good food from a collection of cooks and wine nerds looking for a way forward, together. Expect different menus on different days, plus plenty of sidewalk seats. NEW An ever-changing collection of chefs, menus, and visions animate two spaces steps apart, dubbed Dame and Lil' Dame. Image: courtesy star chefs Dame Collective Jazz booms through Campana’s long, sloping dining room down into the full bar, creating an atmosphere that’s upbeat yet never chaotic. There’s Old World charm to be had, but nothing about the place, opened in 2020, is old or stuffy. Chubby and toothsome pastas like rigatoni amatriciana and tagliatelle alle vongole are the stars, carrying all the quirks of house-made noodles and nonna-approved sauces. Between, go for crostini-sided ramekins of baccalà and chicken liver mousse for the table. ![]() Dinner here is best bookended by a negroni and a Spella espresso, the latter served beside a rich and sticky house-made chocolate gelato. Chef-owner George Kaden cut his teeth in New York under Marco Canora, a true chef’s-chef. Some of Portland’s best pasta hides at this under-the-radar spot, focused on the subtle art of Italian classics. Scan the pastry case for creative Danish pastries, Portuguese egg custard tarts, devil’s food cake. The breakfast sausage sandwich is another house star-a burger’s cool cousin, but with spicy house pork instead of beef. Don’t miss the Pomodoro, a Goodfellas-level pie, each slice garnished with a haystack of cool, creamy stracciatella cheese. The wood-fired pizza, available lunch or dinner, is terrific. Morning or night, a massive, wood-glowing brick oven is in play, firming up over-easy eggs or burnishing the best crusty sourdough toast around. Handmade everything is the house motto-the breads, the pastries, even the tomato paste. ![]() Most of what I need in life is found at this all-day spot.
